Paris 1924 – Games of the VIII Olympiad

Paris was chosen as host to the 1924 Games, to honour the International Olympic Committee founder, Pierre de Coubertin. The Games of the VIII Olympiad were the last event to be organized by Pierre as he was retiring, at the age of 61, after many years of organizing the events. There were 3089 top competitors were sent by 44 nations. The winter sports made their official debut at the Games. The tradition continued until 1992, where the winter sports were held a few months before the summer events. Paavo Nurmi, of the ‘Flying Finns’ fame, made a sensational comeback after his glory at the 1920 Games. He won five gold medals and set more Olympic records, making him the most successful athlete of the Games.

As a result of winning gold medals in their events, the story of British runners, Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, was depicted in the 1981 movie, Chariots of Fire. In addition, Johnny Weissmuller, who is famous for his portrayal of the character, Tarzan, in films, won three gold medals and a bronze in water polo. Also, the Games were the first to introduce an Olympic Village to accommodate athletes, officials, trainers and staff who were associated with the Olympics.
